i heard this was helpful because of the fog. I think I would be able to tell which way was up well ok down because I would only be walking in that direction.

To be complete, in a Cartesian sense, that sign needs to show a third dimension. Something like the direction for forward and backward.
It has the y axis (up/down), x axis (left/right) it needs the z axis (forward/backward).
Otherwise in a dense fog, like I sometimes find myself in, you might find yourself walking backwards when you meant to go forward.
